An Inventory of the Possible

Culture is our discussion with ourselves as to how we think we should be.

It is a map that has the potential for redrawing the territory. It makes meaningful the set of assumptions, deductions, insights and prejudices we have inherited.

Because top-down attempts to control and channel it have all ultimately failed, culture is in the final analysis a communal creation, the social and interpretive ‘art project’ we all participate in.

Culture is the story we spin to tell ourselves who we are.

So who do we want to be?

If there was any bit of advice I’d give to others, I’d say don’t ever think that what you’re good at is too niche, or too stupid and weird to be a viable thing. Forget about careers, just talking about how you view the thing you love doing. In this day and age, there is a community of people like you, there’s an audience out there, and there’s probably a way to get the good stuff in front of them. The second you understand that the thing you love doing is important, not because it’s of worldly import but because you love doing it, the decisions you have to make for your future become a LOT easier.

Life is brief. Spend your life as I did, making certain that other people can’t have the security and fulfillment we all ache and yearn for when we’re young.

People having faith in you makes you want to reward their faith in you by being what they believe you to be. Someone else having faith in you, believing in you, gives you the ability to go beyond what you are or what you think you are and be who they think you are.
